ST. GABRIELS HAS ANNUAL WINTER FUND RAISER

On Sunday, February 18, St. Gabriel's School hosted its fifth annual Winter Fund Raiser. As always, the event was held at Bruno's On the Boulevard, thanks to the generosity of John Fellin, St. Gabes graduate and owner of the local catering hall.
On this Sunday afternoon, two hundred people filled the hall to both support the future of Catholic education in northern Queens and to honor two members of St. Gabes history. Vincent Danz, Class of 1977, was a member of the NYPD who lost his life on that fatal September day in 2001, when he entered the building all others were vacating. He died doing what he swore to do - protect the citizens of NYC. His brothers Greg and Felix were present, as was his mother and other relatives. Felix rendered a touching reflection on his brother's life and death.
Also honored was Ethel Richards, mother of Jaime, Jonathan and Jennifer. They spoke beautifully of their mother's dedication to her teaching at St. Gabes and of her love for the children entrusted to her care. They presented Bro. Edward Shields, principal, with a check which was their mother's desire.
Brother Ed roused the attendees with reminders that they can join in the movement forward on behalf of the children of East Elmhurst. St. Gabriel's continues to move ahead with a new model of education for this school which had previously been a parish-governed school. The hope is that it might be a model for other parish schools which are facing issues of sustainability.
Among the 200 people present was Craig Claxton (pictured above). Craig is better known as Speedy and he has carved out an impressive NBA career, currently playing for the Atlantic Hawks. Craig is a graduate of St. Gabes and he has promised a check to be sent out soon to his alma mater. Fortunately, this Fund Raiser was held on the day of the NBA All-Star game, which enabled Craig to be home for the weekend.
