Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School continues a long tradition of educational excellence going back to 1851 when the De La Salle Christian Brothers assumed direction of what was then known as the St. James School on Jay Street.
Originally established as an all-boys secondary school, Bishop Loughlin became co-educational in 1973. It is presently the only diocesan high school in the Diocese of Brooklyn. With an enrollment of approximately 900 young men and women, Loughlin is the ideal size for an effective high school program. About 85 percent of the students come from Brooklyn as did Doug E. Doug, Rudolph W. Giuliani, and Mark Jackson. Loughlin offers a college-preparatory program for all students and an extensive program of cocurricular, intramural and interscholastic activities academic, religious and athletic.
In a recent survey in which parents were asked why they chose Loughlin, the three main reasons were "a safe school environment," "the school's reputation for academic excellence," and the "school's disciplinary policy." When students were asked what Loughlin meant to them, the following were listed: "care for others," "religious faith," "motivation to learn," and "school spirit."
